The Intriguing Octopus, Otto

The Intriguing Octopus, Otto

When you can’t fall back to sleep, instead of counting sheep, might one imagine … an octopus? Perhaps this jetting, jolting, freely floating oceanic creature completely at peace in its fathoms below might soothe the mind?

Otto the Octopus as a bathroom wall mosaic

Nix the sheep. Let Otto be your guy. Set your sleepy sights on him. This new fine art mosaic from New Ravenna is comprised of thousands of pieces of glass hand nipped and arranged into octopus form.

Otto is made of thousands of pieces of hand-nipped glass.

Known for their remarkable intelligence, the octopus is considered a guardian in the waters of the deep, protecting sailors and helping them find safe passage through perilous waters.

Otto by New Ravenna

Marcie McComb led the team of five master mosaicists to create Otto. His brilliant hues—red, blues, pinks, and even accents of 24k gold—are nestled among tumbled navy matte glass resembling the briny depths of his watery world. The suckers on his eight arms call to mind Kandinsky’s Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles (1913).

The vibrant colors of Otto's eye

New Ravenna even used copper glass from Italy in this one, a conscious choice as it is “a nod to octopuses’ blue-colored blood derived from copper.”

Otto measures in at 182 square feet. His tentacles fall from the wall onto the floor.

Designer Jacquelyn Bizzotto says the inspiration of Otto’s color palette stems from the emotional and symbolic meanings associated with different colors. “Orange evokes warmth and vibrancy,” she says, “while blue suggests calmness and mystery.”
