Since the formation of the studio, SHoP has modeled a new way forward with its unconventional approach to design. At the heart of the firm’s method is a willingness to question accepted patterns of practice, coupled with the courage to expand, where necessary, beyond the architect’s traditional roles. As a founding Principal, Gregg Pasquarelli has been at the center of this collaborative practice for nearly twenty years—leading teams in design, master planning, and real estate development. He has a thorough familiarity working in complex, urban contexts to create dynamic projects that transform their communities. Gregg has served as lead partner on many of the firm’s most prominent projects, including the Porter House, the Barclays Center, two miles on the East River Waterfront, 111 West 57th Street, the American Copper Buildings and Pier 17. His current work includes Fulbright University Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, First Avenue’s Upper Harbor Terminal Amphitheater in Minneapolis, and Midtown Center, a large mixed-use commercial complex in Washington DC centered around a new public square.
Beyond the studio, Gregg has earned a reputation as a thoughtful leader of his generation of innovative architects and a powerful advocate for design quality and community values in contemporary city-building. Gregg’s dedication to moving the profession forward continues in his commitment to lecturing and teaching, where he brings SHoP’s message—about the unity of technological invention, artistic inspiration, and public responsibility—to students across the country and around the world. He has lectured and published globally and has held chaired professorships at schools such as Yale University, Columbia University and The University of Virginia, among others.
SHoP has been recognized with awards such as the Art Basel & Design Miami Design Visionary Award in 2016 and Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Architecture Firm in the World” in 2014, and the 2009 National Design Award in Architecture Design, as well as multiple Progressive Architecture and AIA Awards.
