Kick Back with Kobold

The most clever of designers—and Erwan Bouroullec certainly fits within the rubric—tell a story with every new release.

From “Truss” to “Osso” to the perennial pouf-ball of a sofa called “Ploum”, Bouroullec’s pieces aren’t so much furnishings as they are grand narratives of how to live in harmony with our surroundings. See our extended interview with Erwan here.

Kobold Soft, which is a reprise of the more-formal Kobold Classic (pictured above) is a modular affair modeled after the occasionally mischievous, often-helpful, and always enlightening household spirit of German folklore.

Kobolds don’t refrain from pointing out when something is amiss, “usually helping with chores but becoming temperamental when not properly fed.” With respect to Mr. Bouroullec’s iteration, I interpret the intimation of discomfiture as a sort of violation of Feng Shui, as in something’s just not right with the space.

Kobold’s modular nature and easy adjustability offer a quick fix. With its wooden bases and partitions, soft surfaces and backrests, Kobold provides quick “interior architecture.” it’s essentially a room in a box, offering a bed, seating, storage module, and horizontal surfaces that may be used as tables.

Kobold is a versatile piece, aimed at an urban demographic requiring furnishings that do more than just one thing. This range of settees and daybeds pretty much does it all: from formal sitting to stretching out to eating; reading to watching TV to socializing to meditating. But my favorite use of Kobold (and perhaps the namesake spirit would agree) is characterized by Ligne Roset as “wallowing.”

Add an “s” to that and Kobold may be so comfortable that it just about swallows you up, as with this headless personage above.

Additional perks include removable/washable covers in 29 fabrics. Kobold is also designed for easy dis-assembly and sorting of materials for efficient end-of-life recycling/re-use. See Ligne Roset to find out more.
