Monterey in Montana?
Peter Lassen (1930-2019), Danish designer and furniture maker, believed that furniture could be a work of art: organic, minimalist, utilitarian, and fun—without being overwhelming.

Clearly influenced by the Bauhaus School, Lassen created the Montana Collection in 1982. Soon after, the Monterey work desks and benches debuted. Together, they evolved into a comprehensive collection that includes work desks, benches, open shelving, storage cubbies (both open and closed), and rolling bins.

This being a week to celebrate all things purple, the Monterey Work Desk and Companion Secretary in Lilac first caught our eye, then we realized we couldn’t treat them as separate pieces, given the dynamic, vivid nature of the comprehensive collection.

The daring, eclectic character of these pieces is apparent—the collection exhibits a rigorous, geometric structure in keeping with Danish Modern, yet is also quite compatible with a color palette that transcends the rainbow.

As Montana says, “the collection offers endless possibilities and therefore we can only show a limited range online.”

The Work Desk provides room for the essentials, particularly for a work-from-home set-up. Measuring 28.5”H x 63”W x 31.5″D, it leaves plenty of room for a filing cabinet beneath. Paired with Montana storage, the duo can also function as a communal space—housing model railroads, jigsaw puzzles, Legos, architectural drawings, artwork…

A small desk that discreetly disappears after hours, the wall-mounted Studio Secretary Desk folds down to create a compact workstation. When your work day is over, simply push the desktop to close and it becomes an attractive shelving unit, always, of course, adding a pop of color.

All pieces are made of MDF. The collection has received accolades for sustainability. Find out more at Montana Furniture, and get purchasing info. through Design Within Reach.
