5 Red Rugs to Love!

5 Red Rugs to Love!

We are continuing with our homage to Valentine’s Day, despite our writers’ collective doubt as to the holiday’s legitimacy. At least it gives us a chance to embrace the color red! In that spirit, we turn our attention to five fabulous designer area rugs for scarlet-lovers and rubyphiles.

Bloody Rug by BravinLee

Bloody Rug

This one is definitely made for a friend of mine who finds splattery area rugs to be the best solution for messy children! Bloody Rug is also bloody perfect for people who love goth-inspired decor.

Designed by Wangechi Mutu for BravinLee, this area rug does not skimp on quality. Made of 100% silk woven with 11 colors, Bloody Rug continues the artist’s focus on human representation: “how we perceive and reproduce images of what we think we are, how we view others and create images of what we think of them.”

Crystal Rug in Red defies the luminosity of area rugs through ingenious color composition that makes parts of the rug look transparent, like a collection of colored glass plates.

By overlapping wool circles, designer Charlotte Lancelot engages viewers in a game of perception. “This is how wool, thick and resistant, recreates the transparency of glass,” explains GAN.

Jane Rug by HARTÔ

Designed by painter Pauline Gilain, Jane is a large, soft, decadent rug with abstract dollops of red and pink. “This rug immerses you in a red ocean, for a decor that awakens the senses,” says HARTÔ. The rug is based on an abstract artwork by Gilain that features “garnet, incarnate and vermilion red.” Jane rug is made in India from pure New Zealand wool.

Marilyn Limited Edition Rug by Studio Amebe

From afar you might simply see undulating swirls of color. Look close up and you’ll recognize the inspiration behind the design—Marilyn Monroe. Specifically, Marilyn Monroe in the movie The Seven-Year Itch, in which her dress flares up when she stands on top of a subway grate.

Studio Amebe uses the Marilyn Limited Edition Rug to explore point of view: “The iconic Marilyn skirt viewed upside down gives it a new perspective that goes beyond the well-known scene.” Available via Sitap, the only Italian brand dedicated exclusively to designer rugs.

Punk Vivienne by Angela Adams

I must confess: I LOVE Angela Adams area rugs. I dream of crafting entire rooms based on the brand’s designs. I’m pretty sure I could fill an entire castle with these carpets—so I would not ignore them in our Valentine’s Day rug round-up!

Punk Vivienne pits red and pink against each other in a geometric battle between solids and stripes. The round rug is named after Vivienne Westwood, the fashion designer who “helped define Punk and New Wave style.” I feel like this area rug could have been on the cover of a Duran Duran album back in the 80s!
