Redondo Chair by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso

Redondo Chair by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso

Products by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola command attention. It seems like she creates something spectacular for every furniture show—and many of her pieces become iconic minutes after their debut. You might say Urquiola’s designs are the best debutantes (like the Diamond of the Season in Bridgerton).

When I first sat in Redondo, I never wanted to abandon it. The one I encountered came in light gray velvet, its fabric so velutinous that I couldn’t stop my hands from stroking it. The sinuous stitching also called to me like a siren, begging me to trace its soft lines.

I felt intoxicated by Redondo’s presence—the chair literally made me feel like royalty, as if goblets of wine and multi-tiered trays of cake would always be within reach.

Designed in 2010, Redondo is already an icon. Moroso describes the chair beautifully: “Its curves are shown off by the total absence of sharp corners and the softness of the fabric, and the quilted decoration where the thread, like the lines of a pencil, draws an elegant three-dimensional form to call to the senses.”

I’m not sure I fully understand autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), but I definitely got a pleasurable tingling sensation when I sat in Redondo. Luxuriated in Redondo, I should say.

Redondo also swivels. Its smooth motion echoes its curvy lines. Plus, Redondo’s distinctive quilted pattern, as envisioned by Urquiola, snakes around in small and large swooping shapes. This makes the chair a truly encircling experience.

My dream library—two stories of books with a balcony and circular staircase—would have two Redondo chairs right in front of the fireplace. In a deep wine velvet, like cabochons of garnet.
