Shaggy Seating and Storage

There’s something both monstrous and mellifluous about Fernando Laposse’s innovative use of agave.

The designer’s variation on sisal—the stringy fibers on the underside of thorny agave leaves—is characterized by a “simple knotting system to showcase the fiber in its raw state.”

The technique results in these seemingly fur-draped pieces that remind us of the red beast from the Bugs Bunny cartoon “Hair-Raising Hare,” wherein Bugs famously quipped, “an inteeeresting monster needs an inteeeresting hair-do.”

The combination of furry/fearful + congenial makes a nice transition from Halloween to Day of the Dead, wherein the Dead, though spooky in appearance, are in fact the narrative’s protagonists.

Laposse’s Agave pieces don’t partake of the traditional skeletal Day of the Dead iconography, but the designer is from Mexico and he does focus on the use of indigenous materials.
