Pretty in Pink: PH Artichoke and PH Snowball Anniversary Editions by Louis Poulsen
If you make it 150 years in the design business, then perhaps you do have rose-colored glasses on! In honor of this milestone, Danish lighting icon Louis Poulsen introduces a special Anniversary Collection of its classics—all in Pale Rose with brass details.
PH Artichoke Anniversary Edition
Among the Anniversary Collection, we can’t ignore the PH Artichoke Lamp, an Scandy-Mod jewel shaped like its namesake thistle. Originally designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 (hence the “PH” in its name), PH Artichoke Anniversary Edition pairs Henningsen’s original matte white on the outside and pale pink inside.
With 72 leaves arranged by hand, PH Artichoke hides its light source amidst these cascading layers. The result ensures “that the light is glare-free and the light source cannot be seen from any angle.” This provides a soft warm light, subtly enhanced by the metallized brass accents. Only 300 PH Artichoke Anniversary Edition lamps are being made, each engraved with a unique ID number.
PH Snowball Anniversary Edition
But we can’t neglect the PH Snowball Anniversary Edition. With its elongated ovoid form and curvy louvers, this smaller pendant, which was exhibited in 1958 at Design Museum Denmark, remained lost until 1983 when Louis Poulsen reintroduced it.
The pendant’s eight shades encircle its center like Saturn’s rings. The anniversary version combines white-surfaced shades with pale pink below and glossy brass in the center. Modern and classy, this astronomical wonder won’t last: only 300 numbered lamps are being produced.
