The iconic iconoclast and heart at the center of the Memphis Design Group contributed this design to Italian brand Alpi back in the 80s. Said brand is also partner and supplier of Treefrog stateside. Hence, the Sottsass collection, “Wood veneer designs suggesting unusual combinations in Sottsass’ signature style.”

The wily, wavy, fuzzy pattern evokes the way still water ripples into concentric circles when disturbed, bubbling out into mesmerizing circular patterns.

Admittedly, this Sottsass design is somewhat amorphous compared to a purely circular ripple (or bubble), which also calls to mind the elusive amoeba, another of nature’s mysterious creatures.

Sottsass—and the Memphis group more broadly— was known for challenging the conventions of Modernism and integrating kitsch, pop art, and bold/extravagant patterns.
