NeoCon 2024: Kvadrat Pop-Up at Fulton Market
Kvadrat is a Danish company with a Chicago Pop-Up Show at Fulton Market, a satellite location for NeoCon 2024. While the brand will exhibit many products, two new textiles stand out: Broken Twill Weave and Atrium Outdoor.
Broken Twill Weave by Jonathan Olivares
Colors, materials, and textures are not only part of our sensual world—they also have a profound, subliminal effect on our moods. Broken Twill Weave by Jonathan Olivares for Kvadrat is made from 100% recycled polyester. In a broken twill weave, the diagonal lines do not consistently slant in one direction, but rather alternate at regular intervals along the fabric, creating an interesting pattern. It is suitable for virtually all commercial and residential applications.
Broken Twill Weave is inspired by an experimental house Olivares is building in Mexico. The colors chosen for the fabric reference elements of the landscape surrounding the house, such as the pine cones, agave plants, maple trees, minerals, and flora. Other tones reflect the different hues of the locally made dyed bricks used to construct the building.
Atrium Outdoor by Patricia Urquiola
Atrium Outdoor, by famed designer Patricia Urquiola, is made of Trevira cs. Its permanently flame retardant modified fibers meet all important fire safety standards and represent the state of the art in international fire safety. What makes Trevira stand out from the crowd is that the flame retardant properties are “built in” to the fiber at the molecular level. As a result, these properties are indestructible. Atrium is also waterproof and chlorine resistant. Yet it has a soft feel. Urquiola designed the Atrium Outdoor fabric by combining two similarly colored yarns with a contrasting yarn. This construction infuses the textile with distinctive depth and a subtle sense of wave-like movement in the foreground.
Atrium Outdoor comes in sixteen colors: blues, grays, greens, and a few in the red-orange group. It appeals to architects and designers who have commissions to create inviting seaside furniture, poolside patios, or spa furniture.
It has sustainable properties as well, as it is manufactured from PET plastic bottles, containing 50% recycled materials.
Kvadrat was established in Denmark in 1968 and has deep roots in Scandinavia’s world-famous design tradition. A leader in design innovation, Kvadrat produces high-performance design textiles, rugs, acoustical fabrics, and window covering solutions for both commercial and residential interiors.
