My Beautiful Backside by Moroso
Designed by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien in 2008 for Moroso, My Beautiful Backside is a sofa that captures the magic of an opulent pile of pillows.
“Inspired by a miniature painting of an Indian princess in her palace, sitting on the floor,” My Beautiful Backside celebrates the soft contours of cushions—and the beauty of assemblage. Upholstered in felt and wool, the sofa may put one in mind of “couture English suits.” But that feeling is tempered by luxury: “We embellished the wool fabric with graphic in silver and gold foiling, introducing an opulent, ostentatious Indian character,” explains Doshi Levien.
My Beautiful Backside offers beauty on both sides. While the front of the sofa creates a customizable composition with the different shapes and fabrics of the individual cushions, the back reveals playful touches like oversized symbols and buttons, “jeweling up” the seating.
A deconstructed sofa, My Beautiful Backside almost seems like a child’s imaginative world where artfully arranged pillows turn the floor into seafaring vessels or wild forests.
My Beautiful Backside is a canvas of “highly coloured, floating cushions in various shapes.” Create individual compositions by combining fabrics and shapes, including a fabulous bolster reminiscent of a roll of hard candies—how delicious!
