In the Ivy League: Red Oak Plank Flooring by Hull Forest Products
Hull Forest Products made it to Yale University with its Red Oak plank flooring, having fulfilled the specifications of internationally recognized architect Robert A.M. Stern, who designed the new residential colleges.
Part of Stern’s request was that the flooring in the new residential colleges come from Yale’s own university forests. Hull Forest Products was able to plan and complete a timber harvest in Yale’s Connecticut forest. Hull Forest Products also used Red Oak logs from the university’s New Hampshire forest.
To create the requested rift and quartersawn Red Oak floors, Hull Forest Products used its woodland management service and sawmill: after harvesting the timber, “Hull Forest Products trucked the logs to its Pomfret, CT sawmill, sawed them on its band saw, then air and kiln dried the lumber before custom milling it into the 5-inch-wide solid Red Oak plank flooring that now graces the Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray Colleges.”
Hull Forest Products helped the project earn Gold LEED certification due to the percentage of locally sourced materials. Seen throughout the common areas of Pauli Murray and Benjamin Franklin Colleges, including the head of college houses, this Red Oak plank flooring illustrates the knowledge and commitment of Hull Forest Products.
