The Armchair of Thousand Eyes
For the first installment of our Conversation Piece series we chose a piece by the inimitable Brazilian duo known as Campana Brothers-The Armchair of Thousand Eyes.
Produced by Fendi in collaboration with Giustini / Stagetti Gallery in Rome, The Armchair incorporates more than 100 Fendi Bag Bugs. Once the Campana Brothers saw the furry Fendi creatures, they envisioned one of their signature stuffed animal chairs upholstered in these little monsters.
The Armchair of Thousand Eyes perfectly represents the Campana Brothers' design philosophy and Brazilian heritage. Although they often work with luxury labels, their creations are usually "giving preciousness to poor, day-to-day or common materials." While the Fendi bag doesn't qualify as quotidian by any measure, the playful bag bugs recall the stuffed beasts of childhood. Additionally, The Armchair of Thousand Eyes employs what the Campana Brothers describe as "very Brazilian characteristics-the colors, the mixtures, the creative chaos."
In a way, The Armchair of Thousand Eyes goes beyond the Campana Brothers' other stuffed animal chairs-because the animal itself can't be seen as a whole. Here in the Fendi limited-edition version, the eyes have it. The stuffed creatures-whatever they are (and the mystery is part of the allure, since they could be anything from extraterrestrials to yetis)-is fragmented into a cubist landscape of fur.
Other designers have recognized the visual impact of eyes. For example, Alexander Girard focused on the gaze with a line of accessories for Vitra, including these Graphic Print Pillows.
