Bottle | Brick by the Bottle-Up Foundation
Glass waste has long been a problem on the island of Zanzibar, located just off the coast of Africa, but the Bottle-Up Foundation, an organization focused on up-cycling glass waste, has come up with a solution in the form of bricks made of recycled shards of glass that is called Bottle | Brick.
To make Bottle | Brick, local craftspeople make cement using gravel and sand, which is then mixed with the glass fragments and crushed glass that were once glass bottles.
And while the concept is still in the test phase, the Bottle-Up Foundation hopes to soon begin large-scale production that could be used in a number of settings, including hospitality. Who wouldn’t want a bar top made of what were once beer bottles?
