With a name like Johnny Swing, it seems you're predestined to be either a furniture maker or a ballroom dancer. In the present case, Mr. Swing is a member of the American Studio Furniture Movement. At Design Miami's R & Company booth, Murmuration Bench is on view, scintillating and sinuating within the space.

Made entirely of coins, Swing's creation contains thousands of welds, transforming "American currency into biomorphic and natural forms." Murmuration Bench asks viewers to question what is the nature of currency, both literal and figurative. What is the bench worth in financial terms? But more importantly, what's it worth artistically?

The answer lies in the way the bench re-orients reality, forcing us to view the quarter not as a little change but as a construction material. So a coin that begins as a small object squirreled away in a purse or pocket becomes a massive form bent like a metal amoeba.
