Lucy by Solenica
Invented by Diva Tommei, who holds a PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of Cambridge, Lucy is a natural lighting system that fills indoor spaces "with real sunshine." The sleek sphere is solar-powered and, unlike solar tubes, requires no installation-you only turn it on once, when you take it out of the box!
To work Lucy, simply place it in a sunny spot, indoors or out, and point Lucy toward the area you want to illuminate. Turn off the lights and "let Lucy shine." Lucy tracks the movement of the sun using a proprietary algorithm and then reflects its light to a fixed point inside using an articulated mirror. Solar-powered and wire-free, Lucy is also attractive-just a simple white and clear ball "with a strong Italian aesthetic."
Lucy allows users to save energy by turning off artificial lights (and it's bright enough to light about 500 square feet). Best of all, Lucy harnesses real sunshine, thereby combatting Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and other environmental conditions. Lucy may also help people improve focus, reduce stress, and combat sleep disorders.
