Apparatus Studio Launches 2015 Collection at ICFF
New York-based design studio Apparatus have introduced two new lighting series, ‘Cylinder’ and ‘Link Porcelain’, as well as a table called ‘Portal’
Launched at ICFF 2015, Apparatus’ new collection comprises two lamps and a table
‘Our aim this year was to shade in the details of the world we imagine our fixtures living in,’ says Gabriel Hendifar, the studio’s co-founder and creative director. ‘Furniture was a logical part of that exploration – creating pieces that feel modern with a taste of the ancient, and in a robust single material that balances the mixed materials of our fixture.’
The Cylinder Series is a system of fixtures that elevate the experience of functional lighting. Directional light emanates from recessed points within the simple metal forms. Their streamlined structure and hefty scale allow these pieces to stand-alone or be grouped together, serving as primary or secondary light sources.
Created in collaboration with Ceramicist Alice Goldsmith, the Link Porcelain pendant examines both the strength and vulnerability of the artist's porcelain chain. Fractured links suspend oversized brass shades, their fragility anchored and protected by the oppositional metal.
Rendered in thick sandblasted Ash, Portal Tables conjure the proportions of ancient structures and the rough-hewn texture of primitive furniture. Notched reveals in the solid material establish points of entry, emphasizing the tension between mass and negative space, human and monumental.
