Hella Jongerius Reinterprets Alvar Aalto Classics for Artek
Dutch designer Hella Jongerius is giving a twist to two well-known Alvar Aalto armchairs. Created for Artek, Jongerius' new Armchair 400 and Armchair 401 "add depth and warmth to the collection by creating products that embody simplicity." The color palette and new textiles of these versions update Aalto's originals.
New Materials and Finishes for Armchairs 400 and 401
Jongerius reenvisioned Armchair 400 by giving it "a soft graphic look" with fabric "inspired by sheep." Featuring varying and subtle color variations, these fuzzy textiles complement the wood frame of Armchair 400.
For Armchair 401, Jongerius combined three different fabrics for a color blocking effect. The front of the armchair is bisected in two, while the back offers a third color that "breaks up the long lines of the 401." Both armchairs come in four finishes: silver birch, honey, walnut and charcoal.
