Kaare Klint’s Safari Chair by Carl Hansen & Son
The safari chair is one of the most reinvented pieces of furniture, capturing our imaginations about exotic adventures with natural materials and a stately form. Perhaps for that reason, Kaar Klint’s Safari Chair, originally designed in 1933, is the Danish architect and furniture designer’s most famous piece. This year, Carl Hansen & Søn began producing the chair in versions that are sure to inspire Hemingway-esque daydreams once again.
Kaar Klint’s Safari Chair is as at home in contemporary settings as it was in homes more than 80 years ago
Inspired by a British officer’s chair that Klint saw in a travel guide’s photography of the African savanna, the chair retains the functional design that made it so popular in the field. It is one of the 20th century’s first "build-it-yourself" pieces, requiring no tools for assembly or disassembly.
Consisting of 20 individual parts with no adhesives, the the chair is also easy to roll up and transport. It is available with a matching foot stool in an oil-treated ash, in light or smoked, with canvas or leather upholstery.
