Crafting with Cane: Raphia by Casamania
The outcome of a research project on materials, Raphia is a splendorous marriage of metal and cane-"An oxymoron that brings together two of the spirits of production in Italy: the metal industry and the small, time-honoured manufacturers of cane products." Designed by LucidiPevere for Casamania, which is the duo otherwise known as Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere, Raphia unites the specialty of cane craftsmanship with the modernity of metal.
Italian Chair Unites Old and New Worlds with Cane Weaving on Colored Metal
Previewed at the 2013 Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Raphia is Italian in spirit and construction. With its metal frame and cane weaving, Raphia illustrates the history and technology of Italian furniture design. Bringing old-world artisanal techniques to the new millennium, Raphia "embodies history and tradition in a contemporary context."
Featuring a natural cane seat and backrest, both of which illustrate the material's beauty, as well as the beauty in the unique hands of the weaver, Raphia also adds a splash of color with its metal base. The embossed lacquered metal comes in black, white, bordeaux, and azure, giving a decidedly modern twist to the chair.
About the Manufacturer: Casamania-as you might infer from the name-is richly enthusiastic about their endeavor to create residential furniture. The Italian company was founded in 1984-a year synonymous with dystopian visions of the future. However, by working in concert with international designers, Casamania is able to "move forward in building a dynamic and promising future." (So much for Orwell's vision). The manufacturer offers a "universe of objects": from modular seating to lighting and accessories. By using punches of color, Casamania brings a dash of unexpected play to any interior.
