The new and improved REK bookcase by Reinier de Jong Architecture & Design
Four years after the launch of the original REK bookcase, Dutch architecture and design studio Reinier de Jong have fine-tuned the design with a new finish that makes it more environmentally friendly and a little bit lighter.
REK, the bookcase that grows with your book collection, is now available in lightweight recycled HPL.
Originally launched in 2008, the REK is a popular adjustable bookcase composed of zigzag-shaped components that slide together to provide space for as many books as required.
Whereas the original REK bookcase was made in a crisp white HPL (high pressure laminate) finish, the 2013 edition is made from recycled HPL by Abet Laminati. Available in light or dark gray, the recycled HPL has a warm and intriguing texture that resembles fine concrete or gray cardboard.
Furthermore, the new REK has lost weight. It has the same dimensions as the original but weighs in at just 80 kg. As a result the bookcase is a lot easier to transport and its now much easier to slide the zigzag-shaped components in and out. In addition, Reinier de Jong have also improved the guidance and added a helpful stop mechanism that makes sure that the parts do not slide out too far.
The maximum dimensions of REK are 202 x 228 x 36 cm.
