These brightly colored glass lamps have been designed to look as if the bulbs are melting through the diffuser. The unusual design was created by  Swedish designer Johan Lindst©n for Italian manufacturer Cappellini as a response to the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan.

Suspended from a simple cord, Lindst©n‘s Meltdown pendant for Cappellini features a light bulb embedded within the wall of a colorful glass diffuser.

Lindst©n describes the Meltdown lamps as an ‘attempt to make something beautiful from the disastrous nuclear accident in Fukushima.’  The lamp’s form, where the bulb appears to be on the brink of melting through the glass, is a reference to nuclear meltdown.

Due to launch this month, the lamps are available in six colors – grey, rose, tobacco, light blue, amethyst and amber.
