Last month, a special auction event called Reclaim NYC was held in New York City to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. The items up for auction were unique pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories that were all created from materials reclaimed or salvaged after the storm. You can read more about Reclaim NYC here on Designer Pages. Amongst the items was this sculptural walnut drawer box by Brooklyn-based design studio Volk Furniture. 

More sculptural than functional, this walnut drawer box by Brooklyn-based design studio Volk Furniture was designed to represent the severity of the flood waters in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Designer, builder and founder of Volk Furniture, Brian Volk-Zimmerman’s shop is located in Red Hook, an area of Brooklyn that was badly effected by the storm. Designed to be symbolic of Volk-Zimmerman’s personal experience of the storm, the walnut drawers are attached to the top of a tall pair of salvaged pine legs to provide a safe place for keeping important items above the flood waters. The walnut drawer is finished with a custom brass drawer pull and the interior is made with poplar and lined with shirting fabric.

The drawers were sold at the auction which took place at at Ligne Roset's SoHo showroom in New York last month. All proceeds from the event were donated to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
