Brad Ascalon’s New Atlas Table for DWR
Designers are natural-born storytellers, and Brad Ascalon comes from a long line of them. A third-generation designer descended from sculptors, Ascalon used his personal history, as well as that of the Greeks, to imagine the Atlas coffee and side tables for Design Within Reach.
Like the Greek god Atlas, the table evokes strength; its enduring quality makes the table ideal for homes or hotels with a relaxed, timeless feel
The collection is inspired by Atlas, the mythological Titan that carried the celestial sphere on his shoulders. To transform the story into a piece of furniture, Ascalon designed a black North American black walnut frame that, while elegant, is still strong enough to carry the weight of solid stone on its four limbs. Designed to complement a range of residential and hospitality interiors, the coffee table (15.5 inches high by 37 inches in diameter) and side table (20 inches high by 21.5 inches in diameter) are available with travertine, white Arabescato or black marble tops.

About the Manufacturer: Design Within Reach was founded with the goal of making authentic modern design accessible. “Within reach” means things not found elsewhere. It means in stock. The business started when founder Rob Forbes tried to furnish his apartment with the clean, simple classics he'd come to appreciate while living in London. He discovered that the work of designers like Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia were “out of reach” of anyone who did not know the secret handshake or have the patience to wait months for delivery. In 1999 the company bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn't for 24 hours, until they realized the nighttime answering machine had been accidentally left on.) The rest, as they say, is history. By giving customers access to the best in modern design-including iconic works that have been in production since the mid-20th century as well as innovative items designed today-the company made design within reach.
About the Designer: In 2006, Brad Ascalon founded Brad Ascalon Studio NYC. His multidisciplinary design studio specializes in furniture, packaging, consumer products, environment design and development and clients include Bernhardt Design, Design Within Reach, Ligne Roset and L'Oreal. Ascalon's work has received international acclaim in publications such as Architectural Digest, Art Review, Dwell, Esquire, Interior Design, The New York Times, Surface, and Whitewall Magazine and has been exhibited globally, from Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile to IMM Cologne in Germany, Maison et Objet in Paris, London's 100% Design Festival, and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York.
