New lighting collection by Charlie Whinney Design Workshop
These new sculptural lighting designs are the work of British designer Charlie Whinney Design Workshop, an artist-led design and manufacturing company with a workshop in Beck Head, South Cumbria.
The new collection is the epitome of technical complexity in steam-bent wooden design
Using innovative steam-bending techniques, the new lights are made from locally sourced Ash, Oak and Coppice and made following the studio’s sustainable design methodology. The designs include the Issy’ standard lamp (above), made from a single piece of wood which has been steam-bent into an unusual swan shape, which is then unleashed to create the final form.
The Witherslack Knot Standard Lamp (below) filters out light through the gaps between the solid wood. Made from a single piece of Ash, it is split and steam-bent into a knot before assembly.
Finally the Coppice CurlyShade (below) is made from Ash ‘re-growth’ coppice from the woodlands surrounding Charlie’s studio. The coils are steam-bent to hold their shape. The carbon foot print of this shade is incredibly low as everything is sourced locally.
