Celebrating the bulb: Lamp No.2 by Andrew Mitchell
As LED lighting is becoming more prevalent and incandescent bulbs are becoming more of a rarity, it would seem that the design world is experiencing a wave of nostalgia for the old-fashioned kind. This new clear glass lamp design by British designer Andrew Mitchell celebrates the humble bulb by housing it within a glass shade, much like a museum exhibit.
The design of Lamp No.2 deliberately puts the bulb center stage
Although the lamp provides a perfect showcase for the iconic incandescent bulb design, the design is non-prescriptive, so any bulb can be screwed into place, including new, less attractive energy efficient designs. Blown at a scientific glass blowing factory, the simple glass shade is suspended on a plain wire support, the weight of the glass keeping it locked in place.
