The High Prestige of the Sculptural Reception Desk

Amid the many memorable pieces I’ve profiled for 3rings, the Quasi Console by Aranda/Lasch has been especially enduring. This is not only because the piece possessed an unprecedented and especially compelling aesthetic, but also because it was modeled after an odd and fascinating natural phenomena. Now, Erhan and Mustafa Afsaroglu, a design/build duo based out of Nicosia in Cyprus, has produced a piece that rivals the Quasi Console for its topographic intricacies.

While the Aranda/Lasch piece owes its origins to the microscopic machinations of silica crystals, the Prestige Group’s Reception Desk has an antecedent in a slightly larger fixture of the natural landscape, a massive mountain range in North Cyprus: “Inspired by the Besparmak Mountains, with their enduring and historic qualities, the reception desk sits in the heart of the lobby, welcoming visitors in.”

That isn’t just any lobby but the entranceway of the Prestige Group’s central showroom. In fact, the piece was conceived of and created by designers Erhan and Mustafa Afsaroglu to showcase this showroom’s recent renovation: “created to be the focal point of the new reception area, it reflects the brand’s identity.”

If the Reception Desk reflects the brand, than the Prestige Group aspires toward a synthesis of innovative construction and avant garde texturality. As one observer has remarked, the piece indeed has a “skeletal quality,” owing to its tubular construction and copious quantity of negative space. But this very same bare bones look also gives it an unsurpassed visual interest, as—no matter the vantage—the viewer sees a striated curtain that bends light and tweaks perception, providing a flickering stream of revealing half-glimpses of whatever happens to reside behind.
