Growing up in Miami meant that I did not fully grasp the concept of spring. It was not until much later, after living in New York and Colorado, that I understood the beauty of the season—the excitement with which one greets the first green leaves on trees or the tender shoots of tulips. After a long hard winter, the arrival of spring makes you want to get out and jump around. The lively kinetic feel of the season is also captured in Spring Lamp, an LED lamp designed by Studio Toer of The Netherlands.

Steel and Felt Create a Kinetic Lamp

Like a growing bloom blowing in the wind, Spring Lamp emerges from two slender roots. The light balances on dual steel rods, its violet felt shade a playful violet or gnome’s hat. By moving the steel rods, you can adjust the light up and down and left to right, casting the light just about anywhere—it’s like your own little sun rotating around your home.

The idea behind Spring Lamp was to “expresses the versatility and simplicity of LED technology.” Studio Toer succeeded in highlighting the best attributes of the energy-saving light. As light dances on a surface, so does Spring Lamp dance around a space. Like a leaf twirling in the wind or a squirrel jumping from tree to tree, Spring Lamp moves joyously and unexpectedly in space.
