Seemingly Infinite Diversity: Kelp by Karsten Weigel
German designer Karsten Weigel believes “a good idea is simple—and different.” This philosophy is at play in his modular seating collection called Kelp, available through DDC showrooms in Los Angeles and New York. The idea behind Kelp is to offer variety without too much complication. The series of furniture includes sofas in different sizes, armchairs with and without armrests, stools, and corner and couch elements. Put these together in whatever configuration you like or need. Kelp takes some of its essence from its namesake algae, which grows in forests—in other words, the individual pieces work together to create a larger organism.

Seating Collection Lets You Compose Distinctive Layouts
The Kelp group lets you play with its many components. Part of its appeal rests with a dynamic tension between the simple shapes and interesting colors: “Clear contours, accentuated through colours or materials, enliven the tranquil design of its surfaces.” With sofas available with different bases and upholstery available in solid or contrasting colors, Kelp gives a look that’s serene or dramatic. Ultimately, the pieces in Kelp reflect your vision—it’s your composition.
Karsten Weigel’s collection also includes “little occasional tables that are a story unto themselves.” By combining sofas, chairs, and tables, users can enjoy creating an arrangement—it’s as satisfying as putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
