The Reuse and Repurposing of Northwestern Wood: The Windfall Engineered Panels by Kirei USA.
Engineered using scrap (or reclaimed) wood from the Pacific Northwest region, the Windfall panels are a high-tech result of a lumber company’s collaboration with the green manufacturer known as Kirei. The lumber company – Windfall Lumber – inspired Kirei USA’s final product with the same name that fit its designer panels. Using wood from granaries and breweries, the Tumwater, Washington lumber yard is mainly made from Douglas Fir and Hemlock Fir woods that are given a brand new purpose inside of the house.
“It’s great to reuse demolition material that would otherwise take up space in the landfill,” says John Stein, President of Kirei USA. “Having it become beautiful wood panels is even better. This is old-growth wood that just can’t be found anymore, and we get to bring it to designers.” A dream for many interior and architectural design gurus as both adding LEED points as well as its look – that brings out vivid grains in the laminated strip construction of Kirei – the Windfall panels can completely remodel a surface – whether it is a wall panel, retail signage, display, etc. The finish can come in a wide range, including unfinished, clear, stained, or prefinished in Anthracite, Mocha, Ivory and Leather colors and the panel sizes come in 27″x 96″ (solid) or 48″x 96″ (3-ply with NAUF/FSC core), with a ¾” panel thickness.
Finding their niche in the wood paneling market, Kirei USA is a beautiful way to step up the look of vivid wood grain within or outside of a space for added depth and beauty using reclaimed woods.
About the Manufacturer: Kirei is the Japanese character that means “beautiful”or “clean”. Since sustainable design is both of these (and more), the company of Kirei USA found it a perfect fit. 2003 saw the start of the wood-focused bamboo, coco, wheatboard, and hemp company that has dedicated its purpose to re-purposing and producing eco-friendly goods for the architecture and interior design markets. By taking it a step deeper, they also focus on fair market wages in safe environments to lessen the human impact on the environment, and vice versa.
