Mute Axis Pendant by Christian Vivanco for Luz Difusion
As we saw back in June with his colorful Beam Table Lamps, designer Christian Vivanco has a knack for synthesizing slim, sleek aesthetics with a signature simplified functionality. Vivanco’s latest, Mute Axis for Luz Difusion, is a ceiling-mounted spotlight tailor-made for the new millennium. Like Beam, Mute Axis observes the proven dictum of form following function—the utility quotient, in this case, being the double rotation axes that deed the piece an impressively enhanced mobility.

Christian Vivanco’s Mute Axis Provides Targeted Spotlighting with a Simple Swivel
Looking at the technological progress embodied in Mute Axis, I’m reminded of the track lighting of my childhood, which emitted but a dim illumination that was well-nigh impossible to focus. Mute Axis holds the antidote to such problematic spotlighting, as its streamlined swivel system provides infinite adjustment and pinpoint targeting.
Targeting, in this context, means you can direct light exactly where you want it, and that’s just what Vivanco and Luz Difusion have in mind with this enhanced version of the original Mute. Just as with that piece, Mute Axis recognizes that the crucial element in any light is, well, the light.
Just so, Mute’s design intends naught but a subtle silhouette of the halogen bulb that provides illumination: “The name comes after realizing that the whole outline of this lamp performs as a silent cover for the halogen reflector inside of it, following it in its shapes and volumes, but giving a classic and elegant expression.”
While the original Mute is a pendant lamp with an exposed power cord, Mute Axis sports a flush mount style. That, in addition to the double rotation axes and L-shaped swivel, deeds Mute Axis a sleek, clean, and ultra-contemporary look.
Constructed of aluminum, Mute Axis is available in a variety of finishes—gray & chrome, satin nickel & matte black, or satin nickel & matte white. Other options include different stem lengths and two bulb styles, 100W Halogen or 10W LED.
About the Manufacturer: Ever wary of the sometimes pernicious influence of “mechanization and mass production,” lighting manufacturer Luz Difusion professes a respect for tradition and creative inspiration. Working, nevertheless, with such tech-savvy materials as metal, textiles, glass, and polyethylene mesh, Luz Difusion is able to balance the singular vision of the designer with industry innovations in materials and production techniques. The Manufacturer’s most noteworthy contributions include the Bruja Pendant Lamp, the Struk Table Lamp, and the Tokyo Suspension Lamp.
