Punky, Funky, and Sustainable: Pin Armchair by Jukka Lommi for Punkalive Ltd.
Designed as a chair that’s “suitable for both modern and classical decoration,” the Pin Armchair features thin and thick sweeps in its arms, legs, and back that turn its otherwise traditional silhouette into something playful. Available with an optional seat cushion, the Pin Armchair is the work of designer Jukka Lommi for Finnish furniture company Punkalive Ltd. Pin Armchair comes in a variety of standard colors: black, walnut brown, lusto gray, shanghai white, natural, green, light blue, pink, and white.

Finnish Veneer Spruce Furniture
At 52 cm wide (20 in) x 52 cm deep (20 in) x 84 cm high (33 in), Pin provides a generous, though not overwhelming, seat. Its material, as well as its interesting curvilinear meanderings, sets it apart from other wood chairs. Like all Punkalive products, the Pin Armchair is made of Kerto® wood, which is a laminated veneer spruce harvested from the Punkaharju region of Finland where the company’s family-run production facility is located.
All Punkalive’s furniture abides by the company’s sustainability philosophy: wood is harvested within 100 kilometers of the factory; a computer-controlled production process minimizes waste; and the durability of Kerto® ensures that the end products “will virtually last forever as practical furniture as well as shaping the interior environment.” Although Punkalive is a relatively new company (it began in 2009), it has already garnered worldwide attention, which has allowed them to collaborate with well-known and talented designers like Karim Rashid. Pin Armchair is one of many wood pieces that celebrate clean lines and parabolic curvatures, creating “beautiful and soulful complements” to any interior.
About the Manufacturer: Punkalive Ltd is a Finnish design company dedicated to creating sustainable furniture. Their all wood furniture is harvested from certified Finnish spruce that originates in eastern Finland, within a hundred kilometer radius of Punkalive’s production facility. The company gets its name from Punkaharju, the location of its manufacturing plant, a district in Eastern Finland known for its lakeland scenery: “In Finnish, ‘Punka’ means plump and ‘harju’ means ridge so the name itself describes the area perfectly.” The area is nine kilometers long, a narrow ridge that is “an extremely rare natural phenomenon dating from the ice age.” On either side of the ridge lies the deep blue of the Saimaa waterway.
