For the Birds: Dish of Desire by Frederik Roijé
If you’re interested in the trials and tribulations of birds, then you may want to read The Big Year, which tracks obsessive bird watchers for a period of 365 days. Whether or not you like birds, the true story of bird fanatics is so well told that the book is hard to put down. Thanks to The Big Year, I got a newfound appreciation for birds, which have never been among my favorite animals. They must, however, be a favorite of designer Frederik Roijé, who created a winter birdhouse for them called Dish of Desire.

Constructed of red cedar, porcelain, and aluminum, Dish of Desire comes in various configurations: with or without a protective dome to shield birds from inclement weather; and with anywhere from one to five levels. The idea behind this avian sanctuary is that “birds need a varied menu.” Dish of Desire should inspire humans to put out a variety of goodies for the birds—a different treat for each level. Made in Holland, where the Frederik Roijé design office is located, Dish of Desire combines the company’s modern aesthetic of clean lines and geometric patterns with Roijé’s whimsical tribute to his feathered friends.
A look at other products by Frederik Roijé lets us know that the designer likes birds. The fabulously constructed Breed Retreat, for example, is “an architectural hen house to breed and retreat.” And Holy Homes turns churches into symbolic birdhouses.
