The Change Collection by Tandus Flooring
I’m not much for puzzles, as I lack both the eye to discern the crucial complementarity of proximal pieces and the patience to sort through the overflowing box of 1000, or 2000, or even 5000 pieces. My wife, however, can spend an entire rainy afternoon piecing together an image of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” or Gauguin’s “Jacob Wrestling with an Angel.” If you’re of the former camp, you’re sure to appreciate the good sense behind the Change Collection by Tandus—unlike other modular carpet tiles, with Change there’s virtually no assembly required.

The Change Collection Expands the Palette of Open Office Plans
Change is contract carpeting made to a impart fresh aesthetic. Given the high-degree of durability demanded by the application, that may be easier said than done. Yet Tandus accomplishes it with this bright, fresh collection in 12 colorways and three engaging patterns.
The color palette runs the gamut—from the red-hot intensity of Heat to the refreshing subtleties of Cola to the deeply meditative hues of Velvet Underground. And the names of the different styles speak for themselves: Change, Nonconform, and Factory Floor each offer an endless array of variable patterning and scintillating striations.
When I say “endless,” I very well mean it, for the Change Collection builds on the innovations of Tandus’ earlier Landscapes Line. This collection made waves in the industry because it represented the first modular carpet tiles that—during manufacture—could span the entire length of the cutting machine.
The result for Landscapes was the realization of a continuous design. This represents quite a vertical stride in modular carpet tiles (if you’ll pardon the pun), as it facilitates a seamlessly flowing pattern across the length of large office spaces without resorting to the dreaded repeat.
With Change, Tandus “gleaned insight from current scientific research on human perception and pattern visualization to improve their design efforts.” The result is a modular carpet tile that maintains a fluid transition from one to the next—not only from front to back but from side to side as well—regardless of the orientation at installation. This is a Godsend for designers (and installers) since it obviates the need to match patterns from piece to piece during installation—hence the appeal to those, who, like yours truly, would rather get up and go for a walk than painstakingly scrutinize the brimming box in a futile attempt to find the next piece of the puzzle.

About the Manufacturer: As the website says, Tandus “Innovates and Inspires,” and it does so with an award-winning line of contract flooring. Having charmed the legions of A&D aficionados some three year’s back with designer Suzanne Tick’s Landscapes Line, the manufacturer has expanded the concept into this year’s Change Collection. Winner of the 2011 Best of NeoCon award for Modular Flooring, Change is the only carpet tile to facilitate seamless pattern flow in all four directions, thus offering “greater design flexibility with patterns, textures and colors that flow, pool and shift from tile to tile, culminating in a unified design.”
