North African and Scandinavian Influences: The Marocco Rug by Kasthall
My twin sister spent time in Rabat, Morocco teaching English a few years back. Upon her return, she raved of the saffron from the markets, the sweet chicken pastries, and the breathtaking designs on fabrics and rugs. Looking around for the perfect piece to write today, my Scandinavian roots were drawn to the simple design with a dash of zest that this Marocco rug by Kasthall that had me stop dead in my design blog-surfing tracks.

Designed by Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg, the chief designer at Kasthall, the Marocco rug’s description speaks of its influences from North African patterns combined with the toned-down, minimalist look of Scandnavian design. A woven bouclé rug, the richness is colorways offered varies from a light vanilla to a deep, spicy cayenne and every sensible color in between. More specifically, the rug is made using wool and linen on a linen warp, and it comes in optional lengths, but with standard widths of 90, 140, 170, 200, 250, 300 and 340 cm (and even special widths ranging from 70- 600 cm).
With a refined and sophisticated yet modern design expression, Kasthall designers push the boundaries in rug patterns and weaves that “often combine ancient weaving techniques with modern effect yarns”. Since 1889, the company has been founded on their western Swedish manufacturing roots that continue to strengthen their following.
