Miami Modern: Alton Bench by Cumberland
It is no accident that the Alton Bench is named after one of Miami Beach’s most recognizable streets. This streamlined seat—ideal for museums, lounges, and lobbies—takes its design inspiration from the mid-century architectural details of the Miami Modern style (MiMO), which reigned in the 50s and early 60s. Particularly, the Alton Bench pays homage to MiMO’s “angular rooflines and portico details.” The angularity is evident in the shaping of the bench’s continuous stainless steel legs.

Angular Lines and Fine Detail
From the Designers Speak Collection by Cumberland and designed by Yohandel Ruiz of RTKL, Alton Bench is one of the contract furniture company’s many “beautiful objects that work.” The sculpted seat invites users by “conveying comfort,” while the stainless legs “provide an elegant understructure.” A great piece for refined spaces—especially those recalling style or erudition, such as galleries and libraries—Alton Bench gives spaces a little piece of architectural and sculptural interest.
The bench is available in three lengths: 48, 59, or 72 inches (by 18” x 18”). Its signature metal base comes in polished or satin stainless steel or statuary bronze. Alton Bench can be upholstered in a wide array of fabrics, including classic leather, which is both easy to clean and timeless. The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach should take note: if they had the Alton Bench peppering their exhibit galleries, more people would linger over their masterpieces.
