Basil Triptych Lamps by Enrico Zanolla of DZStudio
Conceived in 2010, this Basil Triptych Lamp by Enrico Zanolla of DZstudio uses a beautiful, perfectly-spun garlic clove shape to shade and illuminate. It’s not until you look deeper into the design and inspiration of Zanolla’s work that you see it mimicking the St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow and the profound symbolism it takes on.

The Spun Look of the Basil Triptych Lamp by Enrico Zanolla was inspired by the St. Basil Cathedral of Moscow
While Enrico Zanolla visited the domes of St. Basil while staying in Russia, he spent much of his time observing and diving into the constructive system that went into their creation. Each of the domes were symbolic – they represent the idea that every man (and woman) is “the light of the world” – and therefore, came in different colors and sizes. Using a 3D CAD system to recreate the look of the domes in his own project of the Basil Triptych Lamps, Zanolla drew out the details of the structures to give off a similar, powerful effect.
The final suspension lamp design came through in a dynamic shape that reflects the movement of a candle, or a light of the world, while at the same time showcases the modular capabilites of modern design technology fused with the way the original domes were built.
Using the past to help us design the future, Enrico Zanolla glorifies the design of the St. Basil Cathedral by honoring it with a fresh take through his Basil Triptych Lamps.
