Top Ten: Space-Slicing Freestanding Screens
Decorative walls take on so many different personalities. Each of these are highly dependent upon the function and the end goal. Chop your space into two, round out an angular corner with a tri-fold screen, or set it outside under a large tree to shield your hot tub from peeping Toms. However your screen may divide, amplify, or protect you, their versatility will never make you choose one. Dyed with a UV resistant bamboo charcoal ink, the textile softblocks in charcoal come with LED lighting to create a “velvety opaque sheen reminiscent of charred wood,” says Molo. In a traditional, foldable screen design, Cherry Tree Design makes their Shoji in two stock sizes but the screen is also popular as a custom-built project. Perfect to divide a room or shield a closet, the Shoji uses versatility to solve the many issues of a large or uninhibited space in residential or commercial applications.

Originally constructed by David Moser for his wife as a custom design, this Japanese-influenced design of a room divider can be used for both privacy and decoration at the same time. Here, the wood and metallic fuse together, creating a solid divider whose durability will make it an heirloom piece for years to come.

Like the old fashioned “triangle paper game” where folded paper turns into a game that answers all of the world’s questions, the Light facet by Mireille Meijs for Bloomming (yes, two o’s and two m’s) is a sculptural yet highly functional room divider that does the same thing for a space. Glistening light and shadows amplify the slight bends in this modular Dutch creation, and its PCABS, inox, and aluminum body is hard to beat.
5. Soft Screen

Available in a cool white or spun gold, the Soft Screen by Herman Miller is strong while appearing light and soft. Its portable nature is a great way to create more space by dividing yours into separate parts. Change your mind? No problem. The soft screen is portable and it stands upright with just enough to transparency to allow light to filter through.

Like a mirror image, two identical patterned sheets of powder-coated laser cut steel are separated by one inch of open space, forming the Petal Screen by Arktura.
