Javier Mariscal’s Green Chair for Mobles 114
If 30 can be the new 50 than certainly gray can be the new green, especially if the former happens to be the raw, unadorned tint of Javier Mariscal’s impressive new Green Chair, which is riding on a burgeoning wave of sustainability all the way from its Milan debut to a prominent international presence.

The Green Chair is Sustainable from Tip to Toe
Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Mariscal as the driving force behind this completely recycled and recyclable chair (a distinction that’s easy to loose sight of beneath the cavalcade of green catch-phrases), whose mono-construction seat and back is made from 100% recycled polypropylene plastic.
Equally important for the infinite and infinitely functional life-cycle we’re all after in this brave new world, the Green Chair can be easily disassembled and integrated back into the product stream—into a third life, if you will, perhaps as a divan, perhaps as a watch. The possibilities are well-nigh endless with a material as versatile as polypropylene has proven to be.
One conjectures that Mariscal—whose sense of whimsy is matched only by that of compatriot Salvador Dalí—would rather appreciate the idea of “reincarnated” product, as it’s just the kind of protean quality possessed by many of his previous works (see Los Muebles Amorosos).
The Green Chair’s other components are a bit mundane by comparison, yet every bit as functional. They consist only of metal connectors and a choice of legs in metal or wood. But these aren’t required—very in keeping with the sustainable spirit, the green chair can be paired with many different types of legs, creating an appealing assemble-it-yourself option using locally-sourced materials.
