French Volvic Lava Countertops by Pyrolave

Growing up, we frequented the granite quarries of St. Cloud, MN for fun. You could swim in a few of the reservoirs and run or cross-country ski between the angular pits on trails. The granite itself was a given in that area and its properties fell second after our enjoyment. In Auvergne, France, quarries are being mined for building materials as well, but instead of granite, a company called Pyrolave is extracting volvic lava stone out of craters for use as countertops in kitchens and bathrooms.

Bright or Muted, Pyrolave Comes in 32 Different Colors to Match Your Kitchen or Bathroom Countertop Style

Pyrolave glazed Volvic lava stone comes in your choice of bold and subtle hues of 16 glossy and 16 matte shades, or can be custom ordered in special colors. To achieve these rich shades, the stone has been imbued with enamels and fired at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius after mining. Because of this high firing, the stone’s exceptional performance is ideal for the kitchen or the bathroom, and suits a wide range of design styles from contemporary to traditional.

Beside the tabletops of kitchens and bathrooms, Pyrolave surfaces can be used as fireplace facades and in outdoor living spaces. The material can be sculpted into extra-long lengths without any seams. Along with the Pyrolave’s consistent, dense durability, the blocks of volvic lava are characterized by a delicate crazing that appears on its surface during cooling. This is common on glazed lava, and varies based on the color of the glaze used.
