A New Shape in Modular Lighting: Ewa Sendecka’s Blossom Light
If I travel in my mind’s eye back to my high school days, I can remember my first desk lamp: a low-end red matte affair with one of those flexi necks that supposedly allowed you to shine light in any direction. Of course, “any direction” in this case was a mere 90 degrees to the right or left. Thanks to designer Ewa Sendecka this quaint limitation has been easily overcome: the gooseneck of her Blossom Light is made of ultra-bend-able and super-resilient flexible cable that allows nearly infinite adjustment.

The Modular Blossom Light Functions as Desk, Wall, or Ceiling Lamp
The flexible tubing that forms the spine of Blossom is constructed of the same stuff used for microphones; thus, the piece boasts the very same freedom of positioning requisite to that appliance. Sendecka has run the power cord up and through the cable, so it essentially functions as both structural lynchpin and power source.
Blossom’s modular quality is achieved via the LED-illumined shades: a gossamer-thin nimbus that filters soft light, while providing an intriguing aesthetic. Apropos of the name, the look reminds me of those long-necked animated flowers that made periodic appearances on the old Warner Brothers cartoons—like Blossom, they wore their petals as a decorative ring about their pencil thin necks.
Each shade and length of cable works as an autonomous component, so you can string as many (or as few) along the length of the lamp as you desire. This modularity allows the varied arrangements that give Blossom its unique appearance. As Sendecka says, Blossom can be suspended from the ceiling, perched upon the table (coiling up the cable to use as a base), or appended to the wall: “Just modify your flexible lamp and invent new shapes! The number and order of connected modules is up to you.”

About the Designer: Poland’s Ewa Sendecka is burning the candle at both ends, it would seem, as she’s currently an industrial design student at both the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Designskolen Kolding in Denmark. In addition to that, she has managed to release an impressive portfolio of product, including the Szafka RTV TV Cabinet, the Cesta Heating Basket, and the Blossom Light.
