Chandelier Anuri by Bleu Nature

I made a mobile out of driftwood and clay fish when I was a kid that still hangs in my dad’s office to this day. Sotheby’s may not be banging down the door to claim my work of art, but there is something about driftwood that is clean and classic. The ocean and sun takes the brightness out of wood and turns it a modern gray that works well with minimalist design. In >Bleu Nature’s Chandelier Anuri, the driftwood pieces have been cut in sectional disks that shows off an atypical perspective of wood.

A Wind Inspired Driftwood Light Fixture

Wood in lighting is not uncommon although wood in chandeliers seems less so. Pavel Eekra’s Pinecone Lamp is made from thin sheets of curved wood that are interlocked and self supporting to create a lightweight, delicate wood fixture. Another example is Sarah Foote’s collection of Ash Veneer Bespoke Lamps which are equally lightweight and delicate. In contrast, the Chandelier Anuri by Bleu Nature takes disks of driftwood and exposes their connectors in an exploding organization that looks like the death of a star or a collision of atoms.

The disks have been skewered like ingredients on an array of shish-kebobs which together diffuse the light source of the chandelier. Chandelier Anuri has a modern, funky design which when combined with rustic wood results in a piece that speaks to an eclectic audience. The work “anuri” means “the wind” in Inuktitut. After last week’s tornadoes that hit US, the form of the Chandelier Anuri in reference to the wind feels right.

About Bleu Nature: Founded in 1995, Bleu Nature is a craft-based business located near Lille, in Northern France. Every year, a team from Bleu Nature combs the beaches in search of driftwood for their projects. Hence, driftwood is their focus material that is complimented by pebbles, lacquered wood, lacquered metal, leather, skins and petrified wood. The benefit of driftwood is the natural curing process it has already gone through, requiring no further treatment.
