Restrictions for barstool designs are few. Generally, they seem to fall into the “under 42 inches” (the height of a normal bar) and the stable on one, three, or four legs categories. The only defining characteristic that affects those of us who take pleasure in sitting on them, however, is the backless vs. backrest versions. In this week’s Top Ten list we follow this backless trend, opting for the highest seats in the most versatile colors, materials, and designs that may or may not make you belly right up.

Disguised as a stump, Boa designed the Tool Barstools out of reclaimed wood – in this case, it’s teak – along with goatskin cushions for padding. Based in Brooklyn, the residential or commercial stools are reasonably priced and require a four to eight week leadtime for craftsman production.

Constructed of anodized cast aluminum, the ergonomic Jamaica seat equips its steel base with 100% recyclable plastic glides. The molded seat can swivel 360° yet it’ll stand firmly as an iconic barstool from Knoll for years to come.

Using a vinyl-coated threaded polyester mesh that has been filled with twelve-hundred recycled wine and champagne corks, the color you choose to finish the steel tubing of its base is virtually transparent in comparison to the effects of its great seat. Nevertheless, opt between a glossy black, matte black, glossy white, or matte white powder-coated finish with other custom powder-coating options available.

4. Flint

Constructed out of flint steel with a raw metal finish and exposed welding, the thin, flared legs of the Flint by CB2 are the minimalist of the group. With pads on the bottoms of each leg, the flat-top barstools are an industrial way to flex your project’s seating power.

5. Clip

Modern and color-driven for versatility in many different projects, the Clip stool was designed for both domestic and contract use by Gino Carollo for Bonaldo.
