The Nest (1:2:3:4) Chair by Kirsten White for Brothers and Sons

What do babushka dolls and giant birthday presents that shed layer upon layer of wrapped boxes until you get a jewelry box have in common? It’s obvious, people love the way they fit together. Perhaps their innate ability to expand and contract reminds of living, breathing organisms, or maybe we’re on a constant quest for ways to make something bigger and bigger while keeping its clean up process easy and quick?

Behold Your Rest In the Beauty of the Nest (1:2:3:4): A Modern Birch Wood Chair by Kirsten White for Brothers and Sons

Nest (1:2:3:4) is a chair (or a series of chairs) designed by Kirsten White which has the same desirable effect. It was built by Jeremy Cox and Lucas Brancalion of the Toronto-based manufacturing company, Brothers and Sons, for the Capacity Show held at Bookhou in their home city earlier this year.  The Brothers and Sons company specializes in custom furniture, installations and fine cabinetry made using environmentally-responsible materials, finishes and recycled items.

Although White has been chased down by the Getty in L.A. to create teak outdoor furnishings of the custom variety for their space, she has created the Nest (1:2:3:4) using birch wood that has been covered in an industrial felt. As the Design Milk post states, “the hollow chair explores scale and volume through nesting,” which reminds me of a set of nesting tables my uncles keep in their San Francisco living room which would look pretty amazing next to the chair. Another cool thing about the chair is that the smaller nested chairs within are perfectly functional. Pull each of them out – yes, even the itty bitty one – and use one as a chair for a toddler, while you and your other kid, and maybe even your hyperactive Chihuahua, try out the others!

White will be showing her work this May at ICFF which will no doubt continue to project her motto of using “clean lines and clear purpose” in her nested approach to great design.
