New at Milano 2011: The Transparent Chair by Nendo
Sitting inside of the Galleria Jannone at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011 you’d hardly notice the chair inside. Clearly – no pun intended – the Transparent Chair by Nendo is not blending in because it lacks intrigue, it’s simply, well, barely seen.

Made with polyurethane film, the highly elastic seat of the chair is like a stretchy hammock underneath you. Although this transparent film is said to be used more frequently as an assistant to packing for “precision instruments” and other products that are “susceptible to vibrations and shock”, says the Nendo website, it performs flowingly in its new state of being.
When I first saw this chair on the Nendo website under their new for 2011, at first I thought it was an incomplete rendering of a concept. Suffice it to say, the white lines and lack of colored structure deceived me in a thumbnail. But upon further examination, the chair still had nothing but a backrest and armrests! If I were in Milano right now at the fair, I’d be running amok trying to get myself one of these. I mean, I simply imagine the reaction others might have to the Transparent chair – that seems to fit into no real category of modern, eclectic, or industrial interiors, to name a few.
Like their clear seat, Nendo likes this ” ! ” factor also, as they’d describe it (which may or may not simply be a raise of the eyebrows when speaking this aloud). In fact, they describe the way they want to be perceived saying “we’d like the people who’ve encountered nendo’s designs to feel these small ‘ ! ‘ moments intuitively.”
Nendo has offices in Milano and Tokyo although the lead designer, Oki Sato, is originally Canadian, from Toronto. Worldly, to say the least, his designs have gone into epic exhibitions in Singapore, Paris, New York, Milan, and more. Presently exhibiting his latest works within Galleria Jannone, the entire line of Transparent furnishings are making their debut.
