Benjamin Hubert has once again come out with a design for a light fixture that has captured the attention of the 3rings staff. It all started with his heavy lights, which were launched in 2008 at 100% Futures show within 100% Design 2008. There’s nothing more impressive than a delicate light fixture made from concrete to confuse and impress both the public and designers. In a total material contrast, we featured the Float collection of lights back in May of last year, which are recycled cork pendant lights that are reminiscent of buoys. Float was exhibited at 100% Design in 2009. If a buoyant light isn’t your fancy, then perhaps the Paddle Adjustable Task Lamp by Benjamin Hubert is a more proactive water-inspired light.

Adding to an already diverse collection of lighting designs, Hubert recently released the Loom collection in conjunction with Swedish manufacturer Zero. Loom is a collection of sculpted pendant lamps that are made from a new woven organic polyester material that was developed by Hubert. The original polyester was reclaimed from the bedding industry, inspiring a finished new material that is strong yet translucent. The textile looks like an exaggerated version of fish-net pantyhose combined with the mesh that is used to protect expensive apples in the supermarket. The finished pendants are lightweight and elegant like a Chinese lantern without the hazards and fragility of a paper shade.

About the Designer: Benjamin Hubert was born in the UK in 1984 and studied Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University and graduated in 2006. He opened his London based studio in 2007 where he explores industrial design through predominantly furniture and lighting. Hubert has been awarded a number of prestigious honors including: Design of the year (British Design awards 2010) Best Product (100% design/Blueprint awards 2009) Homes and Gardens Young Designer of the Year (Design Classic Awards 2010) and EDIDA International Young Designer of the Year 2010.
