Designer Michiel van der Kley came up with a relaxing chair in 2009 which he called Swamp. An “upholstered fauteuil [easy chair] whose seat and back rest seem to sink away into the depths,” Swamp was meant for lazy lounging. Users could disappear into the indentation: it feels like “a warm embrace.” Now Michiel van der Kley’s design for Artifort has a new incarnation—African Swamp. Each one is covered in colorful fabrics that “give Swamp a swinging African feel.”

Tribal Tribute: Exclusive, Ethnic-Inspired Lounge Chair

No two African Swamps are alike, so you can have your very own Swamp (what Artifort calls “assured exclusivity”). And you’ve got the same lounging choices as before. African Swamp comes as a fauteuil, a loveseat, and a pouff (two pouffes actually, since they pair with the regular and large sizes of the Swamp). Swamp R is a one-person chair; Swamp XL fits two, albeit in a “snug, seductive” pose; and Swamp P and PXL are the matching pouffes (little square dollops of fabric “that can also be used on their own as an extra seat”). Equipped with casters or gliders, the African Swamp collection slides easily, so you won’t have to get up in case your tropical drink is slightly out of reach.

The bright fabrics of African Swamp have already proved very popular: one look at the in stock page on the Artifort website reveals just how attractive people are finding these tribal versions of the original lounge chair. I’m no psychic, but I think the company will need to make up a new batch of African Swamp, so we can all “sink away in the depths.”
