Modfire, the Phoenix-based designer, creator, and manufacturer of 14 gauge steel outdoor fireplaces, banks on the broad appeal of the eternal flame. In fact, the Modfire website intends to appeal to those across the demographic spectrum—the reasoning being that everyone gets excited by a vigorous backyard fire, even more so when contained in one of four funkily-colored, upside-down-cone-shaped receptacles. Or, as Modfire frames it, “Naturalist? Nudist? Industrialist? Natural Steel is Calling… Hippie. Granola. Eco-hipster.. call it what you want, but sometimes you just want that natural look.”

The above is the basic recipe for Modfire’s four varieties of consummately modern yet organic outdoor fireplaces. The aesthetic is versatile; though, by Brandon William’s admission, it derived from the 50s ranch vibe of his Phoenix neighborhood. The fireplaces thus exhibit a special yen for the Mid-Century Modern, and will accordingly have a pronounced appeal to aficionados. The units are 48” tall by 22” wide. They come standard in fiery red, an even more fiery orange, cool blue, and natural steel. The uniform unit price of $1,250 includes a standard gas burner upgrade kit… just in case that lovely and redolent wood smoke is forever getting in your eyes.

About the manufacturer: Modfires was born from the crushing desert heat of Phoenix, AZ, the desire of a three year old boy to roast marshmallows, and the relative apathy that designer and founder Brandon Williams had begun to feel toward his previous vocation of making small interior home accessories. Even though this business was successful, it didn’t satisfy Williams’ soul, such as he would have it. To the contrary, metalworking, with its “thunderous mess and cacophony of sounds,” does. Williams says that handcrafting these modern, clean-lined, distinctive, and luminously bright outdoor fireplaces is hard work, but he wouldn’t change it for the world: “I’m a craftsman with metal in every pore of my being and the guy who regularly gets mistaken for homeless and offered change or a hot meal (true story).”
