The Voyage Bed by Kenneth Cobonpue
Cocoons have a naturally comforting shape that works well with relaxation driven furniture. Inspired by nature’s technique, chairs like the Egg Chair by Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel are woven to create the cocoon-type structure that wraps the user in a comfortable and safe position. Woven seating has great sustainable possibilities as seen in the Moebius Double Armchair by Onyx, which uses rattan and water hyacinth (both rapidly renewable and potentially invasive species of plant).
Voyage. Designed by Kenneth Cobonpue.
Kenneth Cobonpue comes from the part of the world where rattan and other strong vines are readily available. An award-winning Phillipine designer, Cobonpue’s designs reference his roots as well as education and work experience spanning three continents. After an education at Pratt in New York City and time spent in Florence apprentencing at a wood and leather shop, Cobonpue returned to his home in the Phillipines to work in his mother’s interior design company, Interior Crafts of the Islands. His designs are made from locally sourced, sustainable materials such as buri and abaca. The voyage bed is one of many creations in a line of hand woven pieces. Constructed with hand woven buri (palm leaf spines) or abaca placed over a steel frame and tied with abaca rope, the cocoon-like bed is everything one dreams of when an exotic tropical vacation comes to mind. Cobonpue’s abilitiy to fuse modern design with natural fibers has earned him Asia’s highest award – the Design for Asia Award of Hongkong. Kenneth Cobonpue and his work have been featured in a number of prestigious magazines such as Architectural Record, Elle Decor, Metropolitan Home and Time.
