The Origami Chair by Vasiliy Butenko for Sergey Mahko’s Interior Workshop
We don’t normally think of a chair as a structure that “packs heat”, but I’ll be honest – there was no denying this was the first idea that came to mind when I saw the massive, angled rear and legs of the Origami Chair by Vasiliy Butenko.

Fold Up In the Ukrainian Design of the Origami Chair by Vasiliy Butenko and Sergey Mahkno
Surrounded by the quiet beauty of Kiev, Ukraine, Vasiliy Butenko worked with friend and fellow architect Sergey Mahkno in his Interior Workshop on the modern interpretation of the Origami. It could be classified as an all-around chair, but I see it as the perfect, modern dining or meeting room chair. Coming in a variety of different colors, it is easy to imagine pairing the wine-colored seats with a deep mahogany dining room table, the camel browns with a solid white conference room, and maybe the black and sea foam green ones around a circular, living table with gold embossed, paisley wallpaper (or something equally as fun).
Sergey Makhno’s workshop (pictured here with the maroon, or wine-colored chairs in the image) specializes in everything design – from the interior design of spaces to architecture and object, or industrial design. In fact, part of their Russian and English website showcases even the hand-painting they do for interior spaces of natural, floral scenes.
Prolific to say the least, Makhno and Butenko pulled out all of the stops with the well-crafted Origami Chairs that lighten up any space with their eye-catching shades and strong back end – perfect for any occasion.
